What is the ARANCIA Project?

The Arancia Project is a worldwide illustration project focused on an original character: Arancia.

Starting in 2009, it’s a project meant to celebrate the worth and diversity of illustration, and to connect artists and styles from around the world through a single character. To put it in other words, it's a project to create common ground, a “bridge” of sorts. And, above all, a small project for illustrators to enjoy together.

For that purpose, we gather as many different drawings of Arancia as possible, and hope to reach out to art lovers from around the world.

Oh, and most importantly... please have fun!

I’ll be waiting for your Arancia!

How to participate

Several guest artists are invited, but everyone is welcome to participate!

To participate, all you need to do is draw Arancia and send me the drawing by email.
Feel free to draw her in your own style! (All I ask is no mature content, please)
It's completely fine to get a little deviated from the original design.

Regarding the submission, please send it to vl.7744@gmail.com.
If you have one, it's also OK to submit it via Pixiv, Deviantart or Twitter.

Once I receive the file, I'll showcase it in the gallery. The three galleries are:

Guests: drawings by invitation
Fans: drawings from everyone
& Friends: drawings including other characters

There is no deadline, so feel free to draw at your own pace.
As for the image size, please send one as large as possible (.psd files are also OK).
Of course, if you want to upload your drawing to another website or online gallery, please do so.

Looking forward to seeing it!

The beginning of the ARANCIA Project

The way the Arancia Project began was a bit unusual, so I'll try to explain it.

The project started in 2009, when I was still in high school. One day, I got a chance to give a lecture about japanese illustration. With this lecture, I wanted to show people how amazing and varied japanese illustration could be. For this purpose, I was going to introduce several artists and artworks, so I decided to try sending them an email explaining what I was doing. To that mail, I added one request - "If you have the time, please draw Arancia in your own style" -, along with an attachment containing the original drawing.

With this I wished to show by comparison how different these styles could be, how the same character in each drawing looked and could be enjoyed differently.
To my surprise, I got several replies.
After a while, I had my inbox full of wonderful replies and drawings. I was completely thrilled.
Thanks to everyone's support, the lecture was a success.

After that, the artists who sent me drawings were curious to see what eachother's drawings looked like, so I set up the first website. As I was building it, I realised I didn't want to end the project or Arancia's journey here, so the Arancia Project was born. I thought that, instead of just sharing with a small class, it could now be shared with and enjoyed by everyone. Maybe there were other people who wanted to see it, maybe there were other people who wanted to participate.
As it kept on growing, I let it grow and went with the flow.

And well, it's thanks to everyone's support that it has evolved to what it is now.

Thank you all so much.

Here's for another good year.
